Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Metaglip combines two diabetes medicines: glipizide, which pushes your body to release more insulin, and metformin, which lowers how much sugar your liver makes. Both already work to bring your blood sugar down. Here's the thing about maitake: some studies suggest it can lower blood sugar on its own. So stacking it on top of your medication could push your numbers too low.

If that happens, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, confused, or unusually hungry. The glipizide piece is the one most likely to cause real lows. The evidence here is fairly limited, and eating maitake as a normal food is unlikely to be a problem. But before you start a concentrated supplement, check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can help you watch your levels.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Glipizide, Metformin page

“Glipizide and metformin (Metaglip) already work hard to pull blood sugar down, which is exactly why this list of 307 ingredients deserves genuine vigilance rather than a shrug. Most of them, 239, can lower glucose on their own, and stacked on this pill the combined effect can tip into true hypoglycemia.”

What is Maitake Mushroom?

Maitake Mushroom
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar support in diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
