Maitake Mushroom and Linagliptin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Linagliptin

Linagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Maitake Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence B

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: maitake mushroom may gently lower blood sugar on its own. Some early research on maitake polysaccharide showed a drop in blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes. So if you stack it on top of Linagliptin (Tradjenta), the two could add up and push your numbers lower than you intend.

This isn't about maitake jamming up how Linagliptin is processed. It's an additive blood sugar effect. Linagliptin by itself rarely causes low blood sugar, so the risk here is modest, but watch for shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Cooking with maitake in food amounts is very unlikely to matter; concentrated supplements are the bigger question. Before adding one, check in with your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your glucose readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Linagliptin page

“Linagliptin (Tradjenta) helps people with type 2 diabetes bring blood sugar down, so most of the 284 supplements and herbs on this page interact for one basic reason: they lower glucose too, and stacking them can drop you into hypoglycemia. I'd read this list with genuine care rather than a shrug.”

  • High cholesterol
  • General wellness and antioxidant support

Maitake is an edible mushroom long used as food and in traditional Japanese medicine, and it is being studied for possible immune, blood sugar, and blood pressure effects. The human evidence is still limited and not strong enough to recommend it as a treatment. It is generally well tolerated as food, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
