Drug & supplement interaction

Neem + Filgrastim

Filgrastim brand name: Neupogen.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Neem and Filgrastim in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Neem and Filgrastim

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Filgrastim and Neem in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Neem safety at a glance

Neem overall Use caution Leaf preparations are likely safe short-term for most adults, but neem oil and seed extracts can be toxic if swallowed.
Pregnancy Likely Unsafe When neem oil or leaf is used orally. Neem oil and leaf have been used as abortifacients. Read the full pregnancy detail
Breastfeeding Avoid There is not enough reliable safety information, so it is best avoided while breastfeeding.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding ratings are from Natural Medicines (Therapeutic Research Center) — the full detail is in the Special populations card below. Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Filgrastim

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Filgrastim is filed under a single classification — oral drugs. Neem has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — the most serious being antidiabetes drugs (moderate), cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) and cytochrome p450 2c8 (cyp2c8) substrates (moderate) — and none of Filgrastim’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Neem and Filgrastim May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“Orally, neem leaf has been reported to cause hemolysis in adults. In one case report, a 35-year-old male with diabetes and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency developed hemolytic anemia and jaundice after drinking several liters of neem tea daily for 3 weeks. All symptoms resolved after discontinuation and supportive treatment.”

Reported for Neem but not commonly for Filgrastim: fainting, thoughts of self-harm, liver problems and kidney problems.

Effects for Filgrastim come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Neem come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 41,970 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Filgrastim that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Filgrastim page

“Filgrastim (Neupogen) is an injection that raises white blood cell counts, most often to protect people on chemotherapy from infection, and the 17 supplements on file with it deserve real attention rather than a shrug. Nearly all are fibers, gums, and mucilage-rich herbs that can blunt how medicines taken by mouth get absorbed.”

About Neem

What is Neem?

Neem
  • Skin conditions
  • Dental and gum health
  • Antimicrobial and antiparasitic
  • Digestive upset
  • Blood sugar support
  • Insect repellent/pesticide

Neem is a tree from India used for centuries in traditional medicine, especially for skin, dental, and antimicrobial purposes. Some small studies are promising for oral health and skin, but high-quality human evidence is limited for most uses. Neem oil and seed extracts can be toxic if swallowed, especially in children, so use with caution and talk to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Azadirachta indica · Meliaceae · Leaves, seeds (and seed oil), bark, and twigs · Capsules, leaf powder, leaf extract, tea, topical oil, toothpaste, mouth rinse, and soap

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Neem is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Neem record says about it on its own.

Neem: dosing

There is no well-established standard dose for neem, and products vary widely in strength and form. Because of this, the safest approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed the recommended amount.Topical products (like creams, soaps, and oils for the skin) and oral neem leaf supplements are used differently, so do not assume one form's instructions apply to another.

About Filgrastim Injection

What Is Filgrastim Injection Used For?

Brand name: Neupogen

Filgrastim injection (available as Neupogen, Nivestym, and Releuko) is used to lower the risk of serious infection in people whose white blood cell counts drop dangerously low. This can happen during chemotherapy for cancer, during treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML), or after bone marrow transplantation. It is also used to help move stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream so they can be collected for transplantation.

In addition, filgrastim is used long-term to reduce infections in people with severe chronic neutropenia — including congenital neutropenia, cyclic neutropenia, and idiopathic neutropenia. Neupogen is also indicated to increase survival in patients acutely exposed to radiation doses that suppress the bone marrow (Hematopoietic Syndrome of Acute Radiation Syndrome).

Taking Neem and Filgrastim Together: Common Questions

Is it safe to take Neem with Filgrastim?
We do not list a known interaction between Neem and Filgrastim. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Neem and Filgrastim have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 5 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
How was the Neem and Filgrastim combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Filgrastim is filed under 1 classification, and Neem has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — none of Filgrastim's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Neem interact with any other medications?
Yes. Neem has 1,013 documented drug interactions in our database — Filgrastim is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Filgrastim interact with any supplements?
Yes. Filgrastim has documented interactions with 17 supplements in our database — Neem is not one of them. The Filgrastim interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
