Propranolol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Panax Notoginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.

Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to help break down propranolol. Panax notoginseng may speed up this enzyme, which in theory could clear propranolol from your system a little faster and leave less of it working. Propranolol is the active drug itself (not a prodrug that needs activating), so faster clearance generally means a weaker effect.

In real life, that could mean your blood pressure or heart rate isn't controlled as well, or that a tremor or migraines come back. Honestly though, this is based only on animal lab work, so it's mostly theoretical and may not happen in people. Still, since propranolol matters for your heart, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Propranolol (Cardiovascular) Used For?

Brand names: Inderal LA, Inderal, Angilol, Syprol, Inderal Injection, Half-Inderal LA, Bedranol SR, Half Beta Prograne, Beta Prograne, Lopranol LA, Slo-Pro, InnoPran XL

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital or clinical settings to treat dangerous heart rhythm problems. It is generally reserved for life-threatening arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) or those that occur during anesthesia.

Specific conditions it treats include fast heart rates coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), certain arrhythmias caused by digitalis toxicity, dangerous ventricular rhythms that haven't responded to other treatments, and fast heart rates caused by excess adrenaline-like substances during surgery.
