Mirtazapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Panax Notoginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Your body partly uses a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break down mirtazapine. Lab and animal studies hint that Panax notoginseng may speed up that enzyme. If that happened in people, your body could clear mirtazapine a little faster, which might leave you with weaker effects, meaning your depression symptoms could creep back or your sleep and appetite benefits could fade.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. The only data we have comes from a caffeine study in animals, not from people taking mirtazapine, so this is largely theoretical. Please don't stop or change anything on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up if you want to use this herb so they can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

What Is Mirtazapine Used For?

Mirtazapine tablets, mirtazapine orally disintegrating tablets, Remeron, and RemeronsолTab are all indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. Major depressive disorder involves a persistently low or sad mood most days, often accompanied by loss of interest, sleep changes, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

The effectiveness of mirtazapine tablets in maintaining a response for up to 40 weeks after an initial treatment period has also been demonstrated. Patients should be reassessed periodically to determine whether continued treatment is needed.
