Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Estrogen
Estrogen falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Panax Notoginseng interacts with.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for estrogen. Part of how your body clears estrogen runs through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Lab and animal studies hint that Panax notoginseng may speed that enzyme up. If it does the same in people, your body could break down estrogen a little faster, which might mean weaker relief from things like hot flashes, night sweats, or vaginal dryness.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. The signal comes from animal research using caffeine, not from human studies on estrogen, so it's mostly theoretical. Estrogen isn't a prodrug, so faster clearing means less effect, not more. Before adding this herb, just check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on whether your symptoms stay controlled.
