Olanzapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Panax Notoginseng interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng might reduce the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Animal research shows that administering Panax notoginseng intravenously for 7 days before intraperitoneal injection of caffeine can decrease maximal blood levels of caffeine by 37%. This interaction was attributed to the ability of Panax notoginseng to increase the activity of CYP1A2.

Here's the gist for olanzapine (Zyprexa): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to break it down and clear it from your body. Panax notoginseng may speed that enzyme up a bit. If it does, your olanzapine could clear faster, leaving less in your system. That might mean the medicine works a little less well, so symptoms like mood swings, agitation, or disturbed thinking could creep back.

Now, the honest part: this is theoretical and comes only from lab and animal studies (one used caffeine, not olanzapine). We don't have human data showing it really matters. Olanzapine is too important to your stability to gamble with, so please don't start or stop anything on your own. Just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
