Rauwolscine and Chlorpheniramine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS

Why this applies to Chlorpheniramine

Chlorpheniramine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Rauwolscine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with seizure threshold lowering drugs might increase the risk of adverse convulsant effects.
In animal research, intraperitoneal rauwolscine lowered the seizure threshold level of the drug metrazol.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: both of these can nudge your brain a bit closer to having a seizure. Chlorpheniramine is an older antihistamine, and like many sedating allergy meds, high or excessive doses can slightly lower the seizure threshold. Rauwolscine, a stimulant cousin of yohimbine, did the same thing in animal studies. Put them together and, in theory, that small risk could add up.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from animal research only, not people, so for most folks taking normal allergy doses this is unlikely to cause a problem. Still, if you have a seizure disorder or take other stimulants, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first. Also watch for the jitteriness, racing heart, or anxiety that rauwolscine can bring on its own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorpheniramine page

“An over-the-counter allergy pill sounds harmless, but chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton) has one of the longer supplement interaction lists I review, and it calls for real vigilance, with the major-rated entries the ones to understand first. Most of the list can shift how the body clears the drug: grapefruit can raise its levels while St.”

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements.
