Rauwolscine and Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine

These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 3 Interactions?

Rauwolscine interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Rauwolscine in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS

1 of 3

Why this applies to Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Rauwolscine interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with seizure threshold lowering drugs might increase the risk of adverse convulsant effects.
In animal research, intraperitoneal rauwolscine lowered the seizure threshold level of the drug metrazol.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist with rauwolscine and a combo product like Zutripro (hydrocodone, pseudoephedrine, and chlorpheniramine). Rauwolscine is a yohimbine-type stimulant, and the concern on file is that it may lower the seizure threshold, meaning it could make seizures a bit easier to trigger. Pseudoephedrine and chlorpheniramine can nudge in that same direction too, so stacking them theoretically adds up.

Honestly, the evidence here is thin. It comes from an animal study, not from people, so I wouldn't panic. That said, both products can leave you feeling jittery, anxious, with a fast heart rate or higher blood pressure, which isn't a fun mix. Since rauwolscine isn't recommended for folks with heart issues anyway, please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES

2 of 3

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, rauwolscine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Rauwolscine is structurally related to yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS

Here's the wrinkle with this combo. Zutripro contains hydrocodone, which is actually a prodrug. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to turn part of it into hydromorphone, the form that does much of the pain-relieving work. Rauwolscine is a cousin of yohimbine, and lab studies suggest yohimbine can block CYP2D6. If that holds true here, less hydrocodone may get converted, so you might get weaker pain or cough relief than expected.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on test-tube data, not real patients, so it may not amount to much. I'd also note rauwolscine is a stimulant that can raise heart rate and blood pressure, and pseudoephedrine does the same thing, so stacking them isn't ideal. Please run this past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.

STIMULANT DRUGS

3 of 3

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine, Chlorpheniramine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, taking rauwolscine with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse stimulant effects.
Rauwolscine has demonstrated stimulant effects in animal research.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to focus on: that combo product (Zutripro) contains pseudoephedrine, which is itself a stimulant decongestant. Rauwolscine also has stimulant-like activity, since it can boost norepinephrine, your body's own get-up-and-go chemical. Stack the two together and you may simply be adding stimulant on top of stimulant, which could bump up your heart rate and blood pressure and leave you feeling jittery, anxious, or unable to sleep.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on animal research, so it's not a hard-and-fast warning. Still, if you have any heart issues, high blood pressure, or anxiety, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them. Don't change anything on your own.

  • Bodybuilding and physique support
  • Energy and stimulant effects
  • Athletic performance
  • Libido support

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
