Here's the honest picture: this concern is mostly theoretical. Rauwolscine is a stimulant, and in one old animal study it made seizures easier to trigger. Metoprolol, a beta blocker you take for blood pressure, chest pain, or after a heart attack, falls into a broad group of drugs that can slightly lower the seizure threshold. Put together, the worry is a marginally higher chance of seizures in people who are already prone to them.

For most folks this is unlikely to be a real problem, and the evidence is weak. The bigger, more practical issue is that rauwolscine raises heart rate and blood pressure, working directly against what metoprolol is trying to do. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, rauwolscine might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Rauwolscine is structurally related to yohimbine. In vitro research shows that yohimbine inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.

Here's the thing with these two together. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear metoprolol out of your system. Rauwolscine is a cousin of yohimbine, and lab studies suggest yohimbine can slow that enzyme down. If rauwolscine does the same, metoprolol could build up a bit higher than usual. That might mean your heart rate drops too low, your blood pressure dips, or you feel dizzy, tired, or lightheaded.

There's also a tug-of-war going on. Metoprolol's whole job is to slow your heart and lower blood pressure, while rauwolscine is a stimulant that can push them up. That's a working-against-each-other situation. Keep in mind this interaction is only theoretical right now, based on test-tube data, not real patients. Still, since metoprolol is a heart medication, I'd run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Rauwolscine (alpha-yohimbine) is a stimulant alkaloid closely related to yohimbine that is marketed mainly in fat-burning and pre-workout supplements. Human evidence for its benefits is very limited, and it can raise heart rate and blood pressure and cause anxiety, so it should be used with caution and is not recommended for people with heart conditions, anxiety, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

What Is Metoprolol Used For?

Brand names: Lopressor, Toprol XL

Metoprolol is used to treat several heart and blood pressure conditions. Metoprolol succinate extended-release tablets (including Toprol-XL) are approved for high blood pressure, angina pectoris (chest pain from the heart), and heart failure. Metoprolol tartrate tablets (including Lopressor) are approved for high blood pressure, angina, and — when used alongside intravenous metoprolol — to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death after a definite or suspected heart attack.

Metoprolol tartrate injection (intravenous form) is used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack to reduce cardiovascular death, and is followed by oral metoprolol therapy. Lowering blood pressure with metoprolol reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
