Rhodiola and Ketazolam

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Ketazolam

Ketazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, rhodiola might increase the risk of adverse effects when taken with CNS depressants.
A review of adverse event reports in Poland identified cases of excessive sedation, myoclonus, hypotension, and hallucinations when rhodiola was taken with haloperidol, diazepam, or alprazolam.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Ketazolam is a benzodiazepine, the same family as diazepam and alprazolam. It calms the nervous system to ease anxiety, and that means it can already make you feel drowsy, relaxed, or a bit foggy. The concern here is that Rhodiola may add to that calming effect, so the two together could leave you more sedated than you expect.

To be fair, this is a theoretical worry backed only by scattered case reports, where people combining Rhodiola with sedatives noticed things like heavy drowsiness, low blood pressure, muscle twitching, or odd perceptions. It's not common and the evidence is weak. Still, if you take Ketazolam, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Rhodiola, and go easy on activities like driving until you know how you feel.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ketazolam page

“Alcohol comes first. A beer or glass of wine on top of ketazolam (Loftran), a benzodiazepine sedative, can deepen its drowsiness and other side effects, and that is well documented.”

  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Stress and coping (adaptogen)
  • Mental performance and focus
  • Mild depression
  • Physical and exercise performance

Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
