Lomitapide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for lomitapide (Juxtapid): your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it from your system. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) suggest a concentrated rooibos extract can slow that enzyme down. If that held true in the body, lomitapide could build up and hit harder than intended.

With this drug, more in your system usually means more stomach and liver trouble, things like nausea, diarrhea, belly pain, and rising liver enzymes. That matters because lomitapide already carries a serious liver warning. The good news: this is only theoretical and based on lab work, and a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause problems. Still, before using strong rooibos extracts, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Lomitapide

What Is Lomitapide Used For?

Brand name: Juxtapid

Juxtapid (lomitapide) is used alongside a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments — including LDL apheresis (a procedure that filters LDL from the blood) where available — to lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is a rare, inherited condition that causes extremely high LDL cholesterol levels from birth.

Juxtapid is approved for use in adults and in children aged 2 years and older with HoFH. It has not been proven safe or effective for other types of high cholesterol, including the more common heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Its effect on heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular events has not been established.
