Here's the wrinkle with this combo: the hydrocodone in Hycodan or Tussigon is a prodrug. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to convert it into hydromorphone, which is what actually relieves your cough and pain. Lab studies hint that rooibos may block that same enzyme. If that happened in people, you'd likely get less pain and cough relief, not more, because less of the active form is made.

That said, this is theoretical and based only on test-tube work, not human studies, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very different from a concentrated extract. I wouldn't lose sleep over an occasional cup, but if you plan to use rooibos extracts regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Hycodan combines hydrocodone (a narcotic cough suppressant) with homatropine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break hydrocodone down. The concern here is that rooibos might slow that enzyme a little, which could let more of the medicine linger in your body. If that happened, you might feel its effects more strongly: extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or slowed breathing.

Here is the reassuring part. This is only a theoretical worry based on lab studies using concentrated rooibos extracts, not real people. A regular cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you take strong extract capsules, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor first.
