Amlodipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the quick picture with rooibos and amlodipine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break amlodipine down. In test tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme. In theory, slowing it could let a little more amlodipine build up in your body, which might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect a bit stronger.

If that happened, you could feel more of amlodipine's usual side effects, like dizziness, flushing, headache, or some ankle swelling. That said, this is based only on lab data, not on people, so it's a weak and theoretical concern. A daily cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're thinking about concentrated rooibos extracts, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Amlodipine Used For?

Brand name: Norliqva

Amlodipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children aged 6–17 years. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Sdamlo (oral solution) is specifically indicated for hypertension in adults and pediatric patients 6 years of age and older.

Amlodipine also treats coronary artery disease in adults, including chronic stable angina (chest pain with exertion), vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's or variant angina, caused by coronary artery spasms), and documented coronary artery disease in patients without heart failure or significantly reduced heart pumping function.
