Here's the gist for propranolol. Lab studies hint that rooibos can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C19, which is one of the pathways that helps clear propranolol from the body. If that enzyme works more slowly, a bit more propranolol could hang around, which in theory could mean a stronger effect. Propranolol is an active drug (not a prodrug), so more of it usually means a slightly stronger response, such as a lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, sleepiness, or cold hands and feet.

That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so the real risk is uncertain and likely small with everyday tea. Since this oral solution is given to babies, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding rooibos.

Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 to help clear propranolol out of your system. Rooibos, at least in test-tube studies, seems to slow that same enzyme down a bit. If it does the same thing in people, propranolol could hang around longer and act a little stronger than expected. With this medication that might mean a lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, tiredness, or feeling lightheaded. In infants treated for hemangioma, watch for poor feeding, sluggishness, or unusually cool skin.

The honest part: this is only based on lab research, not real human cases, so a cup of rooibos tea is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated extracts are a bigger question mark. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor before regular use.

Here's the simple version for propranolol. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break it down. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in the body, propranolol could clear more slowly and build up a bit, nudging its effects stronger. For a baby on propranolol for a hemangioma, that might show up as a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, sleepiness, or low blood sugar.

The honest part: this is only based on lab research using a concentrated extract, not real people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over a normal cup of rooibos tea. Still, since propranolol in infants is closely dosed, please run any rooibos extract by your pediatrician or pharmacist first.

What Is Propranolol (Infantile Hemangioma) Used For?

Brand name: Hemangeol

This intravenous (IV) form of propranolol is used in hospital settings to treat serious, life-threatening heart rhythm problems. It works on several types of abnormal rhythms, including those that happen during anesthesia or are caused by drug toxicity.

Specific uses include fast heart rhythms coming from the upper chambers of the heart (supraventricular tachycardia), dangerous rhythms caused by too much digitalis in the body, and certain fast rhythms triggered by excess stress hormones (catecholamines) during surgery.
