Saffron and Phenoxybenzamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Phenoxybenzamine

Phenoxybenzamine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Saffron interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of saffron with antihypertensive drugs might have additive effects.
Animal and human research suggests that saffron extract can decrease blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: saffron may gently lower blood pressure on its own. Phenoxybenzamine already blocks alpha receptors to relax your blood vessels, so pairing the two could add together and drop your pressure more than expected. With this drug, that mostly shows up as dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, a fast heartbeat, or a stuffy nose.

I'll be honest about the evidence though. This concern comes mainly from animal and lab studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Everyday culinary amounts of saffron in food are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplement doses are where I'd be more careful. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a saffron supplement, and don't change your medication on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenoxybenzamine page

“Phenoxybenzamine (Dibenzyline) is usually prescribed for pheochromocytoma, an adrenal tumor that sends blood pressure surging, often to steady a patient in the weeks before surgery, so keeping pressure in a narrow band is the entire goal of treatment. That makes this a list to treat carefully rather than skim.”

About Saffron

What is Saffron?

Saffron
  • Depression and low mood
  • Anxiety
  • PMS symptoms
  • Memory and cognition
  • Eye health (age-related macular degeneration)

Saffron is a costly spice that has shown promise in early studies for mild-to-moderate depression and some mood and PMS symptoms, but most research uses small trials, so results are not definitive. It is generally well tolerated in food and small supplement amounts, but high doses can be harmful and it should be avoided in pregnancy. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using saffron supplements.

About Phenoxybenzamine

What Is Phenoxybenzamine Used For?

Brand name: Dibenzyline

Phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride capsules are used to treat pheochromocytoma — a rare tumor of the adrenal gland that releases large bursts of stress hormones, causing dangerous spikes in blood pressure and heavy sweating. The capsules help keep those episodes under control.

If the heart rate becomes too fast during treatment, a doctor may also prescribe a beta-blocker alongside phenoxybenzamine.
