Darunavir, Cobicistat falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) INDUCERS — the group Sassafras interacts with.

In vitro research suggests that cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) inducers might increase the cytotoxicity of safrole. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Also, it is not known if CYP1A2 inducers increase the toxicity of sassafras. Inducers of CYP1A2 include omeprazole (Prilosec).

Here's the short version for your Prezcobix (darunavir with cobicistat): the concern isn't that sassafras changes your HIV medicine. It's the other way around. Some lab studies hint that drugs which speed up a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 may turn safrole, the main compound in sassafras, into more of its harmful, liver-damaging and possibly cancer-causing form. So the worry is added toxicity from the sassafras itself, not weaker or stronger HIV control.

Honestly, this is based only on test-tube and animal work, and it has never been shown in real people. Even so, sassafras with safrole is something the FDA banned from food for good reason. The safest move is simply to skip internal sassafras and stick with safrole-free products. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or HIV provider first.

Sassafras is an aromatic North American tree whose root bark and oil were once popular in teas and as a flavoring, but it contains safrole, a compound the FDA has banned in foods because it can cause cancer and liver damage. There is no good evidence it safely treats any health condition, and most experts recommend avoiding internal use. If you want the flavor, choose products that are labeled safrole-free.

About Darunavir and Cobicistat

What Is Darunavir and Cobicistat Used For?

Brand name: Prezcobix

Prezcobix and Prezcobix Ped are used to treat HIV-1 (the virus that causes AIDS) in adults and children 3 years of age and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs). They are always used together with other HIV medications — never alone. They are approved for people who are new to HIV treatment (treatment-naïve) as well as those who have taken HIV medicines before (treatment-experienced), as long as their virus does not have certain darunavir resistance mutations.

Prezcobix is specifically approved for adults and pediatric patients weighing at least 40 kg. Prezcobix Ped is available for smaller pediatric patients aged 3 and older weighing at least 15 kg. The right product and dose depend on the patient's weight and their ability to swallow tablets.
