Here's the simple version: remimazolam (Byfavo) is a sedative given during procedures to make you sleepy and relaxed. Sassafras has been reported to have its own mild calming, drowsy-type effects. The concern on file is that stacking two things that push in the same direction could add up, leaving you more sedated than expected, which can mean deeper drowsiness, slowed breathing, or feeling groggy and unsteady longer than usual.

I want to be honest about how strong this is: this warning is theoretical, based on how these substances behave, not on solid human studies. Separately, sassafras contains safrole, which experts say to avoid swallowing at all because of liver and cancer risks. Since remimazolam is given by an anesthesia team, just tell them about any supplements you take so they can plan safely.
