Here's the short version: warfarin already thins your blood, and saw palmetto may add to that effect. There are a few reports that saw palmetto can lengthen the time it takes blood to clot. Put the two together and you could, in theory, bruise or bleed more easily. Things to watch for would be nosebleeds, bleeding gums, blood in your urine or stool, or cuts that are slow to stop.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The concern comes mostly from anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so for many people it may not cause a problem at all. Still, warfarin is a drug where even small shifts matter, so please don't start or stop saw palmetto without checking with your doctor or pharmacist first. They may want to keep an eye on your INR.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
