Torsemide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Schisandra interacts with.

Theoretically, schisandra might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro and animal research suggests that schisandra induces CYP2C9 enzymes. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break down torsemide. The lab and animal studies we have suggest schisandra may speed up that enzyme. If that happened in people, your system could clear torsemide a little faster, which in theory might leave you with a weaker water pill effect. For someone using it to control blood pressure or to keep fluid off, that could look like more swelling in the legs, a bit more shortness of breath, or blood pressure creeping up.

Here's the reassuring part: this is only theoretical and has never actually been seen in humans, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just keep an eye on your weight, swelling, and any blood pressure readings, and check in with your pharmacist or doctor before adding schisandra.

What Is Torsemide Used For?

Brand names: Demadex, Soaanz

Torsemide tablets are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup causing swelling — associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease. Removing that extra fluid can relieve swelling and make breathing easier.

Torsemide tablets are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.
