Lomitapide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for Lomitapide (Juxtapid). Your liver clears this medicine using an enzyme called CYP3A4. Animal studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta may speed that enzyme up. If that held true in people, your body could break down lomitapide faster than expected, which might leave less in your system and make it work less well at lowering your LDL cholesterol.

I want to be honest: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab and animal data, not human studies, so we really don't know how much it matters in real life. That said, lomitapide is a specialized, closely monitored drug for HoFH. Please don't change anything on your own. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding Schizonepeta so they can keep an eye on your cholesterol numbers.

About Lomitapide

What Is Lomitapide Used For?

Brand name: Juxtapid

Juxtapid (lomitapide) is used alongside a low-fat diet and other cholesterol-lowering treatments — including LDL apheresis (a procedure that filters LDL from the blood) where available — to lower LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and non-HDL cholesterol in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH). HoFH is a rare, inherited condition that causes extremely high LDL cholesterol levels from birth.

Juxtapid is approved for use in adults and in children aged 2 years and older with HoFH. It has not been proven safe or effective for other types of high cholesterol, including the more common heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Its effect on heart attacks, strokes, or other cardiovascular events has not been established.
