Simeprevir Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the concern with pairing Schizonepeta and simeprevir. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to handle simeprevir, and animal research hints that a compound in this herb may speed that enzyme up. If that happens in people, your liver could clear simeprevir faster than intended, leaving less of it to fight the hepatitis C virus. The worry isn't extra side effects, it's the opposite: a weaker drug and a possibly less successful treatment.

I want to be honest that this is theoretical and based only on lab and animal work, so we don't know it matters in real life. But because simeprevir is part of a serious hepatitis C regimen, I'd skip the herb until you check with your doctor or pharmacist. Please don't change your medicine on your own.

What Is Simeprevir Used For?

Brand name: Olysio

  • Simeprevir is used along with ribavirin (Copegus, Rebetol) and peginterferon alfa (Pegasys) to treat chronic hepatitis C (an ongoing viral infection that damages the liver). Simeprevir is in a class of medications called protease inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of hepatitis C virus (HCV) in the body. Simeprevir may not prevent the spread of hepatitis C to other people.
