Warfarin Sodium falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Schizonepeta interacts with.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, schizonepeta might increase the effects and side effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline, zileuton (Zyflo), zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.

Here's the gist for warfarin. Schizonepeta contains a compound that, in animal and test-tube studies, appears to slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2. Warfarin is cleared in part through that pathway, so in theory the herb could let warfarin linger a bit longer in your body. With a blood thinner, that could nudge your levels up and raise the risk of bleeding, things like easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or blood in the urine or stool.

That said, this is theoretical and comes only from lab and animal data, not from people. But because warfarin is so finicky (even small shifts can change your INR), I'd play it safe. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding Schizonepeta, and don't change your warfarin on your own.

Animal research suggests that schizonepetin, a monoterpene constituent of schizonepeta, induces cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. Theoretically, schizonepeta might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Some substrates of CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others.

Here's the gist for warfarin. Animal studies hint that a compound in Schizonepeta may speed up the CYP3A4 enzyme. Warfarin is partly cleared by that enzyme, so in theory this herb could nudge your body to break warfarin down a little faster, which might weaken its blood-thinning effect and leave you slightly more prone to clotting.

I want to be honest, though: this is based only on lab and animal data, not human studies, so it's quite uncertain. Still, warfarin is a narrow-margin drug where even small shifts can throw off your INR. I'd never tell you to start or stop anything on your own. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor first, and if you do use it, more frequent INR checks are wise.

About Warfarin

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand names: Coumadin, Panwarfin, Sofarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
