Why this applies to Guaifenesin, Phenylephrine

Guaifenesin, Phenylephrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Securinega Suffruticosa interacts with.

Securinega suffruticosa contains the alkaloid securinine. Animal research shows that securinine has CNS stimulating effects.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. The product you asked about pairs guaifenesin (a mucus thinner) with phenylephrine, a decongestant that mildly revs up the body, narrows blood vessels, and can nudge your heart rate and blood pressure up. Securinega suffruticosa contains securinine, which acts as a nervous-system stimulant. So you'd essentially be stacking one stimulant on top of another.

Putting them together could, in theory, add up to more jitteriness, a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, restlessness, or trouble sleeping. Keep in mind this concern is based on how these compounds work, not on solid human studies. Still, securinine can be genuinely dangerous (it has been linked to seizures), so I'd steer clear of it altogether and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Guaifenesin, Phenylephrine page

“Phenylephrine, the decongestant half of guaifenesin and phenylephrine (Endal, Liquibid-D, Deconsal), tightens blood vessels and raises blood pressure and heart rate, so this list of 62 interacting supplements calls for genuine care. Forty-four of them can pile extra stimulation on top of the drug's own effect, and five rate major, most…”

About Securinega Suffruticosa

What is Securinega Suffruticosa?

  • Nerve and muscle weakness
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Nerve-related conditions in traditional medicine
  • Childhood paralysis (historical traditional use)
  • General tonic

Securinega suffruticosa is a shrub used in traditional East Asian medicine, best known for an alkaloid called securinine that strongly stimulates the nervous system. Because securinine is powerful and can cause seizures and serious toxicity, this plant is not a safe or well-studied dietary supplement, and it should not be used for self-treatment. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before considering anything containing this plant.
