Securinega Suffruticosa Drug Interactions: The Bottom Line

From the HelloPharmacist Editorial Team · Updated July 2026

Based on the available evidence, the overall risk of a clinically significant Securinega Suffruticosa drug interaction appears low for most people, mainly because the concerns identified so far are theoretical rather than proven in humans. None of the listed interactions are rated major, and every one of them rests on the same moderate, animal-research-based concern rather than on documented problems in people.

Interactions deserving the most attention

The interactions that deserve the most attention involve stimulant medications. Securinega suffruticosa contains a compound called securinine, which acted as a nervous system stimulant in animal studies, so combining it with stimulants could in theory add to their effects and raise the chance of side effects like restlessness or a racing heart. We would treat this as a sensible caution rather than an established danger, since it has not been confirmed in human studies.

What the rest of the list means

The long list of interacting medications can look worrying, but it reflects one theoretical concern applied across many drugs in the stimulant family. All of it comes from animal research on the plant's stimulating compound, and none of these predicted effects has been shown to cause meaningful problems in people so far.

What Severity, Likelihood & Evidence Mean

Severity — How Serious It Can Be

  • Major. Clinically significant; generally best avoided, or used only under direct professional supervision.
  • Moderate. May need monitoring, a dose adjustment, or separating the times you take each one.
  • Minor. Generally not clinically significant, but still worth noting and mentioning to your pharmacist.
  • No known interaction. Checked against our sources with nothing documented — not the same as proven safety.

Likelihood — How Well It’s Documented

  • Likely. Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction
  • Probable. Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • Possible. Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists
  • Unlikely. Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

Where This Data Comes From

  • Interaction records are evidence-graded and sourced from the Natural Medicines database (TRC Healthcare), the same reference used by pharmacists and hospitals.

Securinega Suffruticosa: Uses, Safety & Side Effects

The bottom line

Securinega suffruticosa is a shrub used in traditional East Asian medicine, best known for an alkaloid called securinine that strongly stimulates the nervous system. Because securinine is powerful and can cause seizures and serious toxicity, this plant is not a safe or well-studied dietary supplement, and it should not be used for self-treatment. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before considering anything containing this plant.

Overview

Securinega suffruticosa is a woody shrub that grows in parts of East Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East. It has long been used in traditional Chinese and other East Asian medicine systems.

The plant is most famous as the natural source of a compound called securinine, an alkaloid that strongly affects the nervous system. Because of this compound, the plant has historically been used in attempts to treat nerve and muscle weakness rather than as a gentle everyday herbal remedy.

Today, Securinega suffruticosa is studied mainly in laboratory research rather than sold as a common dietary supplement. It is not a mainstream herbal product in most countries.

How it works

The main active compound in Securinega suffruticosa is the alkaloid securinine. Laboratory research suggests securinine blocks certain calming signals in the nervous system (it acts on GABA receptors), which makes nerves fire more easily. This is why it acts as a stimulant.

Because it increases nerve activity, securinine has been studied for effects on the brain, nerves, and muscles. However, this same stimulating action is also what makes it dangerous in higher amounts—it can trigger seizures.

It is important to understand that most of this information is from animal and test-tube studies. The way the whole plant or its extracts behaves in the human body is not well established.

Safety & precautions

Securinega suffruticosa is not considered a safe, well-studied dietary supplement. Its key compound, securinine, is a strong nervous-system stimulant that can cause seizures, muscle spasms, and other serious toxic effects if too much is taken.

There is no reliable, standardized safe dose for general use, and product quality and alkaloid content can vary widely. People with seizure disorders, heart conditions, or neurological problems should especially avoid it.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: There is no safety data to support use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the plant's stimulant alkaloids could be harmful. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it completely.

Always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before using any product that contains this plant. Do not use it to self-treat any condition.

Side effects

Because of its stimulant alkaloids, possible effects can include restlessness, muscle twitching, increased reflexes, and nausea.

More serious effects from too much securinine can include seizures (convulsions), severe muscle spasms, breathing problems, and other signs of poisoning. These can be medical emergencies.

If someone has taken this plant and develops twitching, stiffness, or a seizure, seek emergency medical care right away.

Dosing

There is no established, standardized safe dose of Securinega suffruticosa for use as a supplement. The plant's alkaloid content can vary, and the active compound securinine has a narrow margin between any effect and toxic effects.

Because of these safety concerns, we cannot recommend a specific amount. If you are considering any product containing this plant, do not guess a dose—speak with a doctor or pharmacist first and follow professional medical guidance rather than a product label alone.

Securinega Suffruticosa: Common Questions

What is Securinega Suffruticosa used for, and does it work?
People use Securinega Suffruticosa for a range of reasons, but according to the Natural Medicines database the current clinical evidence is insufficient to confirm it works for the specific conditions it has been studied for. See the graded list on this page, and talk to your pharmacist or doctor before relying on it for any condition.
Does Securinega Suffruticosa interact with prescription medications?
Yes. We list 172 medications with a known interaction with Securinega Suffruticosa. Use the checker above to see how Securinega Suffruticosa interacts with a specific drug.
How are Securinega Suffruticosa interactions rated?
Each interaction is graded major, moderate, or minor based on how clinically significant it is and the strength of the evidence behind it. Major interactions are the most serious and are best avoided, or used only under close professional supervision.
Is it safe to take Securinega Suffruticosa with my medications?
It depends on the specific medication. Some combinations are fine, while others call for monitoring, timing changes, or should be avoided. Check your exact drug above and confirm with your pharmacist or doctor before starting, stopping, or changing anything.
Where does this Securinega Suffruticosa interaction information come from?
Our interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database — an evidence-graded reference for vitamins, herbs, and supplements — and is reviewed by licensed HelloPharmacist pharmacists, who may add clinical context.
What is Securinega Suffruticosa used for?
Traditionally it has been used for nerve and muscle weakness, fatigue, and paralysis, largely because it contains a stimulant alkaloid called securinine. However, strong human evidence for these uses is lacking.
Is Securinega Suffruticosa safe to take?
It is not considered a safe, everyday supplement. Its main compound, securinine, is a powerful nervous-system stimulant that can cause seizures and serious toxicity, so it should not be used for self-treatment.
Can I take it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
No. There is no safety data, and its stimulant alkaloids could be harmful, so pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it entirely.
Why is this plant studied if it can be toxic?
Researchers are interested in securinine's effects on nerve cells in laboratory studies, but that scientific interest does not make the plant safe to use on your own.
