Here's the simple version: Focalin (dexmethylphenidate) is already a stimulant that revs up your nervous system. Securinega suffruticosa contains an alkaloid called securinine that, in animal studies, also stimulates the brain. Put two stimulating things together and you can stack their effects, which may mean a faster heart rate, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, anxiety, or in a worst-case scenario, an increased risk of seizures.

I'll be honest with you: this concern is theoretical and based mainly on animal and lab research, not human studies, so we can't say exactly how likely it is. But securinine itself is a powerful, poorly studied compound that isn't a safe self-care option. Please don't combine these without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

What Is Dexmethylphenidate Used For?

Brand name: Focalin

Dexmethylphenidate — available as tablets (Focalin, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride) and extended-release capsules (Focalin XR, Dexmethylphenidate Hydrochloride Extended-Release) — is approved to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in both children and adults.

The extended-release capsule formulations are not recommended for children younger than 6 years old, because younger children tend to have higher drug exposure in their bodies and a greater chance of side effects such as weight loss compared to older children at the same dose.
