Here's the practical picture. Securinega suffruticosa contains securinine, a compound that revs up the nervous system in animal studies. Oxymetazoline, whether you use it as a nasal spray (Afrin), a rosacea cream (Rhofade), or eye drops (Upneeq), tightens blood vessels by acting on adrenergic receptors. The worry is that stacking a nervous-system stimulant on top of this could, in theory, add to stimulant-type effects like a faster or pounding heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, or headache.

To be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not on solid human studies. Even so, this plant isn't a safe self-care supplement on its own. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Oxymetazoline Topical Used For?

Brand names: Afrin, Rhofade, Upneeq

Rhofade (oxymetazoline hydrochloride cream, 1%) is approved to treat persistent facial erythema (redness) associated with rosacea in adults. It is applied directly to the face once daily.

Other oxymetazoline topical products — including Afrin spray and Medix Nasal Decongestant Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride and Tukol Max Action solutions — are available for nasal use. Uses for those products are not covered in the current prescribing information provided here.
