STIMULANT DRUGS
Why this applies to Diphenhydramine, Pseudoephedrine
Diphenhydramine, Pseudoephedrine falls under STIMULANT DRUGS — the group Securinega Suffruticosa interacts with.
Securinega suffruticosa contains the alkaloid securinine. Animal research shows that securinine has CNS stimulating effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with this combo. Securinega suffruticosa contains securinine, an alkaloid that revs up the nervous system by blocking your brain's natural calming signals. Your Actifed Allergy contains pseudoephedrine, which is itself a stimulant that can already cause a racing heart, higher blood pressure, jitteriness, and trouble sleeping. Stacking two stimulating substances together could exaggerate those effects.
I'll be honest with you, though: this interaction is theoretical and based mainly on animal studies, not human reports. The bigger issue is that securinine itself can be quite toxic and has been linked to seizures, so it isn't something I'd recommend self-treating with at all. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing these.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Diphenhydramine, Pseudoephedrine page
“This medicine pulls in two directions at once, which is exactly why the supplement list for diphenhydramine and pseudoephedrine (Actifed Allergy) is not one to skim. The antihistamine half is sedating, so anything else that slows the brain deepens drowsiness; beer, wine, and kava all carry major ratings, with alcohol the best documented.”

- Nerve and muscle weakness
- Fatigue and low energy
- Nerve-related conditions in traditional medicine

- General tonic
Securinega suffruticosa is a shrub used in traditional East Asian medicine, best known for an alkaloid called securinine that strongly stimulates the nervous system. Because securinine is powerful and can cause seizures and serious toxicity, this plant is not a safe or well-studied dietary supplement, and it should not be used for self-treatment. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before considering anything containing this plant.
