Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: caffeine and sodium benzoate is already a strong stimulant, and Securinega suffruticosa contains an alkaloid called securinine that also revs up the nervous system. Putting two stimulants together can add up. You'd be more likely to feel jittery, anxious, restless, with a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, and in a worst case, securinine has been linked to seizures. So this is about adding stimulant effects on top of each other, not changing how the drug is broken down.

I'll be honest with you, this concern is based on lab and animal studies, not solid human data, so it's more of a theoretical caution. Still, securinine is a risky plant that isn't well studied as a supplement. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”

About Securinega Suffruticosa

What is Securinega Suffruticosa?

  • Nerve and muscle weakness
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Nerve-related conditions in traditional medicine
  • Childhood paralysis (historical traditional use)
  • General tonic

Securinega suffruticosa is a shrub used in traditional East Asian medicine, best known for an alkaloid called securinine that strongly stimulates the nervous system. Because securinine is powerful and can cause seizures and serious toxicity, this plant is not a safe or well-studied dietary supplement, and it should not be used for self-treatment. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before considering anything containing this plant.
