Sesame + Bosentan
Bosentan brand name: Tracleer.
Bosentan falls into 2 drug categories that Sesame can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Taking sesame oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Sesame interacts with whole categories of medication. Bosentan falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Sesame in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Bosentan
Bosentan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Sesame interacts with.
Clinical research shows that replacing other cooking oil with sesame oil can lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in patients with or without hypertension. There is also some evidence that sesame oil has additive effects in patients also taking atenolol, nifedipine, and/or hydrochlorothiazide. In patients using nifedipine, using a blend of sesame oil and rice bran oil for cooking reduces both SBP and DBP more than nifedipine alone.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the simple version: bosentan (Tracleer) already works to relax and open up your blood vessels, which can lower your blood pressure as part of how it treats pulmonary arterial hypertension. Sesame oil, when used regularly in cooking, has shown a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own in some studies. So in theory, the two together could nudge your blood pressure a little lower than expected.
If that happened, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or unusual tiredness. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how sesame behaves, not strong proof. Everyday culinary amounts of sesame are unlikely to cause trouble, while concentrated supplement doses are more of a question mark. If you use a lot of sesame oil or take supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Bosentan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro, sesame inhibits CYP2C9. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Bosentan (Tracleer). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break this medicine down. In lab dish studies, sesame compounds appear to slow that enzyme. If that happened in real life, bosentan could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual side effects like headache, flushing, swelling in the legs or ankles, low blood pressure, or changes on liver tests.
The key point: this is theoretical. It comes only from test-tube research and has never been reported in actual people. Normal sesame in food (on bread or in hummus) is very unlikely to matter. If you're considering concentrated sesame supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Sesame
What is Sesame?
- Heart and cholesterol health
- Blood pressure support
- Source of healthy fats and minerals
- Skin and hair care (topical oil)
- Antioxidant support
- Cooking and nutrition
Sesame is a nutritious seed and oil widely used in cooking and traditional medicine, and it provides healthy fats, fiber, and antioxidant compounds called lignans. Some early research suggests sesame may modestly help with cholesterol and blood pressure, but the evidence is limited. Sesame is also a common, sometimes serious, food allergen, so people with seed allergies should be careful.
About Bosentan
What Is Bosentan Used For?
Brand name: Tracleer
Bosentan is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs. In adults, it helps improve the ability to exercise and slows how quickly the disease gets worse.
In children aged 3 years and older with idiopathic (no known cause) or congenital (present from birth) PAH, bosentan is used to lower resistance in the lung blood vessels, which is expected to improve exercise ability. Tracleer is one brand approved for both adults and pediatric patients with PAH.

Bosentan Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Bosentan as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Sesame — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
