Omeprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Sesame interacts with.

Theoretically, sesame might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro, sesame inhibits CYP2C9. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: omeprazole is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In test-tube studies, compounds in sesame seem to slow that enzyme down. In theory, if the enzyme works slower, omeprazole could hang around a bit longer and its effects could be slightly stronger. With this drug that might mean more of the usual side effects, like headache, stomach upset, gas, or diarrhea.

But here's the important part: this is only lab data, and nothing like it has actually been reported in people. The amount of sesame in your meals (a sprinkle on a bun, a dab of tahini) is very unlikely to matter at all. If you're using concentrated sesame supplements daily, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

About Omeprazole

What Is Omeprazole Used For?

Brand names: Prilosec, Zegerid, Losec

Omeprazole is used to treat a range of conditions where stomach acid causes problems. These include heartburn and acid reflux (GERD), erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from acid), and stomach or duodenal ulcers. It can also be used alongside antibiotics to help get rid of an H. pylori infection — a bacteria that causes ulcers.

In more serious cases, omeprazole is used to manage conditions where the stomach produces far too much acid, such as pathologic hypersecretory conditions (rare medical disorders that cause extreme acid overproduction). It is approved for adults and children one year of age and older for GERD and erosive esophagitis.
