Why this applies to Valsartan

Valsartan falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Sesame interacts with.

Taking sesame oil with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that replacing other cooking oil with sesame oil can lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in patients with or without hypertension. There is also some evidence that sesame oil has additive effects in patients also taking atenolol, nifedipine, and/or hydrochlorothiazide. In patients using nifedipine, using a blend of sesame oil and rice bran oil for cooking reduces both SBP and DBP more than nifedipine alone.

Here's the simple version: Valsartan (Diovan) already lowers your blood pressure, and sesame oil seems to nudge it down a little too. So using a lot of sesame oil while on valsartan could add up and push your numbers lower than expected. If that happens, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, tired, or a bit faint, especially when you stand up quickly.

Keep in mind this is based mostly on pharmacology and some small studies, not strong proof, so it's a gentle caution rather than a red flag. Normal cooking or sprinkling sesame on food is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using sesame oil heavily or as a supplement and notice your blood pressure running low, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Theoretically, sesame might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro, sesame inhibits CYP2C9. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for sesame and your valsartan. In test tube studies, compounds in sesame can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which helps clear valsartan from your body. In theory, if that enzyme works slower, a bit more valsartan could hang around, which might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect up. That could show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or unusually tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

The honest truth: this is only lab-based, and it has never actually been seen in people. Normal amounts of sesame in your food (on a bun, in tahini, in stir-fries) are very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated sesame supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up first.

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
