Liotrix is a thyroid hormone replacement, a blend of T4 and T3 that fills in for the hormone your thyroid isn't making enough of. The concern here is mostly on paper. Some traditional herbs, including shepherd's purse, are thought to nudge thyroid function, so the worry is that adding it could theoretically throw off the careful balance of your thyroid therapy.

I want to be honest with you: this is rated as theoretical and based on how the herb might behave, not on real human studies showing a problem. Still, thyroid dosing is fine-tuned, and even small shifts can leave you feeling sluggish, cold, and tired, or swing you the other way with jitters and a racing heart. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Because it may affect blood clotting, blood pressure, and the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously under professional guidance.

About Liotrix

What Is Liotrix Used For?

Brand names: Euthroid 3, Euthroid 1/2, Euthroid 1

  • Liotrix is used to treat hypothyroidism (a condition that results when the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone). Symptoms of hypothyroidism include lack of energy, depression, constipation, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, dry coarse hair, muscle cramps, decreased concentration, aches and pains, swelling of the legs, and increased sensitivity to cold. When taken correctly, liotrix can reverse these symptoms. Liotrix is also used to treat goiter (enlarged thyroid gland). This medication is also used to test for hyperthyroidism (a condition where the thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone). Liotrix is in a class of medications called thyroid agents. It works by supplying the thyroid hormones normally produced by the body.
