Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Zopiclone is a sleep medicine that already slows down your brain to help you nod off. The worry here is simple: shepherd's purse has been reported to have a mild calming or sedating quality of its own, so pairing the two could pile on top of each other. That might leave you feeling extra drowsy, groggy the next morning, lightheaded, or unsteady on your feet, which raises the risk of a fall.

I want to be honest, though, this is a theoretical concern based on how the herb behaves, not on strong human studies. For many people it may never cause a noticeable problem. Still, since both can affect alertness, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if you're older or take other sedating medicines.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Zopiclone page

“Zopiclone is a prescription sleep aid, which makes this one of the pages I read with real concern, because the most dangerous combinations add sedation of their own. Nearly 80 of these ingredients depress the nervous system, and stacked on a sleeping pill they can bring heavy drowsiness or, at worst, slowed breathing.”

About Shepherd's Purse

What is Shepherd's Purse?

Shepherd's Purse
  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Minor bleeding (nosebleeds, wounds)
  • Mild diuretic
  • Digestive complaints
  • After-childbirth bleeding (traditional)

Shepherd's purse is a traditional herb most often used to help slow heavy menstrual bleeding and other minor bleeding, but solid human research is very limited. Because it may affect blood clotting, blood pressure, and the uterus, it should be avoided during pregnancy and used cautiously under professional guidance.
