Here's the gist with loxapine and shepherd's purse. Loxapine is an older antipsychotic that already tends to make people drowsy. Shepherd's purse is thought to have some calming, sedative-like properties of its own. Put them together and the worry is simply that the sleepiness could stack up, leaving you more groggy, dizzy, or slowed down than usual.

I want to be straight with you: this concern is theoretical, based on how the herb behaves in lab and animal studies rather than real human cases, so the actual risk for most folks is probably small. Still, if you notice extra drowsiness, lightheadedness, or trouble concentrating, especially when driving, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

What Is Loxapine Used For?

Loxapine capsules are used for the ongoing treatment of schizophrenia in adults. Adasuve (loxapine inhalation powder) is used in a different, more specific situation: to quickly calm sudden, severe agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder. Because of serious safety requirements, Adasuve must be given by a healthcare professional in a certified medical setting — it is not a take-home medication.
