Spearmint and Testosterone Undecanoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Testosterone Undecanoate

Testosterone Undecanoate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Spearmint interacts with.

Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: oral testosterone undecanoate (brands like Jatenzo, Andriol, and Kyzatrex) is one of those medicines that can put a little extra workload on your liver, which is why your doctor checks liver labs while you're on it. The concern with spearmint is purely theoretical. In animals, very high amounts of spearmint nudged up liver markers (AST and ALT), but this has not been seen in people.

So a cup of spearmint tea or spearmint in your food is very unlikely to be a problem. The caution really applies to concentrated, daily spearmint supplements taken alongside this testosterone. If you take both, just let your pharmacist or doctor know so they can keep an eye on your liver labs. Please don't stop either one on your own.

  • Memory and focus
  • Mild stress and anxiety
  • Joint discomfort

Spearmint is a common culinary mint that is generally safe in food and tea amounts. About Testosterone Injection

What Is Testosterone Injection Used For?

Brand names: Andriol, Aveed, Jatenzo, Kyzatrex

Testosterone injections replace testosterone when the body makes too little or none. The label describes this in men with primary hypogonadism (a problem in the testicles) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (a problem with the pituitary or hypothalamus signals).

Testosterone Enanthate Injection is also used to stimulate puberty in carefully selected boys with clearly delayed puberty. It may be used secondarily in some postmenopausal women with advanced, inoperable breast cancer that has spread to the bone, under an oncologist’s direction. Aveed is for hypogonadism in men and is not for use in women.
