Animal research suggests that (-)-carvone, a major constituent of spearmint, has sedative effects. However, in humans, chewing spearmint-flavored gum induced arousal effects.

Here's the honest picture: Temazepam (Restoril) is already a sedative that calms brain activity to help you sleep, and spearmint may nudge that same system. The concern is that, in theory, one of spearmint's compounds (carvone) could add a little to the drowsy, relaxed, fuzzy feeling temazepam gives you. That might mean deeper grogginess, more next-morning sleepiness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

But notice how soft this is. It's based only on lab and animal data, not human studies, and curiously, people who chewed spearmint gum actually felt more alert. So the everyday risk looks low. Tea and culinary amounts almost certainly won't matter. If you're thinking about a concentrated spearmint supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
