Animal research suggests that (-)-carvone, a major constituent of spearmint, has sedative effects. However, in humans, chewing spearmint-flavored gum induced arousal effects.

Here's the honest picture: the concern with spearmint and felbamate is mostly theoretical. Felbamate already works by calming overactive brain signals, and it can cause drowsiness, tiredness, dizziness, or trouble concentrating on its own. The worry is that a plant compound in spearmint called carvone showed mild sedative effects in animal studies, so in theory it could add to that sleepy feeling.

In real life, the evidence is thin, and oddly, people chewing spearmint gum actually felt more alert, not less. Food and tea amounts of spearmint are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated supplements are less studied, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding one, especially while you're getting used to felbamate.

Theoretically, high doses of spearmint might increase the risk of liver damage when taken with hepatotoxic drugs.
Animal research suggests that drinking spearmint tea for 30 days can increase markers of liver damage, including aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and cause liver degeneration and necrosis, in a dose-dependent manner. This effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the thing to know about felbamate: it can be hard on the liver on its own, which is why your doctor usually checks your liver enzymes with bloodwork while you take it. Spearmint isn't changing how felbamate is broken down or how well it controls your seizures. The concern is simply that both could stress the liver at the same time.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. The worry comes only from animal studies where large amounts of spearmint raised liver enzymes (AST and ALT). This has not been seen in people, and the spearmint in food or an occasional cup of tea is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated spearmint supplements are the real question mark. Watch for yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain, and check with your pharmacist before starting any spearmint supplement.

About Felbamate

What Is Felbamate Used For?

Brand name: Felbatol

Felbamate is not a first-line seizure medication. It is used only when a person's epilepsy has not responded well enough to other treatments and the seizures are severe enough that the serious risks of this drug are considered acceptable.

In adults, felbamate can be used alone or alongside other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain), with or without spreading to become a full seizure. In children, felbamate is used as an add-on treatment for both partial and generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of childhood epilepsy. Felbatol is specifically labeled for these uses in both adults and children.
