Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the short version: Temazepam (Restoril) already calms the brain to help you sleep. In animal studies, Pinellia ternata also seemed to lower activity and make animals sleep longer. So the worry is that stacking the two could deepen that sedating effect more than you intended.

If that happened, you might notice things like extra grogginess, dizziness, slowed breathing, poor balance, or feeling foggy and hungover the next morning. I do want to be honest with you though: this concern comes only from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since both push in the same sleepy direction, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Please don't change your temazepam on your own.

Here's the gist: Temazepam (Restoril) already calms the brain to help you sleep. In animal studies, Pinellia ternata made the animals less active and increased their sleeping time. So the worry is that pairing the two could add to that sedating effect, leaving you groggier, dizzier, or more unsteady the next morning, with possible trouble concentrating.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is based on lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it stays in the theoretical column for now. Pinellia is also typically used in carefully processed Chinese herbal formulas, which adds another layer of uncertainty. If you're considering both, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on the drowsiness.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.
