Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the gist: Clonazepam already calms the nervous system, which is how it eases seizures and panic. Pinellia ternata appears to have its own sedating, calming effect, at least in animal studies where it lowered activity and lengthened sleep. Put the two together and the worry is simply additive drowsiness. You might feel sleepier, foggier, less coordinated, or notice slower reactions and dizziness than you would from the clonazepam alone.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The evidence here is from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Clonazepam isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about changing its blood levels, just stacking two sedatives. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the gist with Pinellia ternata and your clonazepam (Klonopin). Animal studies suggest this herb has its own calming, sedative-like effect, making the animals less active and sleepier. Since clonazepam is a benzodiazepine that already slows down brain activity to ease seizures and panic, the worry is that the two could pile on top of each other.

If that happened, you might feel extra drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady on your feet. I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based only on animal research, not human studies, so we don't truly know how much it matters in people. Still, because both can be sedating, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them. Don't change your clonazepam on your own.

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Clonazepam Used For?

Brand names: Klonopin, Rivotril, Ceberclon

Clonazepam is approved to treat several types of seizures — including Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a severe form of epilepsy), akinetic seizures (sudden loss of muscle tone), myoclonic seizures (sudden muscle jerks), and absence seizures (brief lapses of awareness) in patients who haven't responded to other medicines.

It is also approved for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia (fear of situations that might cause panic). Panic disorder involves repeated, unexpected panic attacks along with ongoing worry about having more attacks.
