Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the gist with Clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) and Pinellia ternata. Clobazam is a benzodiazepine that calms electrical activity in the brain, so it naturally has a sedating, drowsy side. Pinellia ternata, in animal studies, seemed to lower activity and lengthen sleep time. Put those two together and the worry is simple addition: more drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady than you'd get from your seizure medicine alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is theoretical, based only on lab and animal work, not real-world cases in people. So it isn't a reason to panic. Since Clobazam treats serious seizures, never stop or adjust it on your own. Just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding Pinellia, especially in any multi-herb formula.

Here's the short version: clobazam (Onfi, Sympazan) already calms electrical activity in the brain, and in animal studies a Pinellia ternata preparation also lowered activity and made the animals sleep longer. So the worry is simple addition. Stacking the two could deepen clobazam's usual effects, meaning more drowsiness, sluggishness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, or unsteadiness.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is a theoretical concern based only on animal and lab work, not human studies, so we don't know how much it matters in real people. Pinellia is also raw-toxic and used in complex herbal formulas, which adds uncertainty. Since clobazam treats serious seizures, please don't change anything on your own. Run this combination past your neurologist or pharmacist first.

Clobazam is used as an add-on (adjunctive) treatment for seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS), a severe form of childhood-onset epilepsy. It is approved for patients 2 years of age and older.

This indication applies to all available forms: Sympazan (dissolving oral film), Onfi (tablets and oral suspension), and generic clobazam tablets and oral suspension.
