Here's the gist for desipramine (Norpramin). This is a tricyclic antidepressant that already tends to cause drowsiness, especially when you first start it. Pinellia ternata has shown calming, sedative-like effects in animal studies, so the concern is that piling the two together could deepen that sleepiness and leave you feeling foggy, dizzy, or extra tired.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: the evidence comes from animal research only, not people, and it's considered a theoretical, additive effect rather than something proven in patients. Desipramine is not a prodrug, so this isn't about changing how your body activates the medicine, just a possible overlap in sedation. Pinellia also needs careful processing to be safe, so loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Desipramine hydrochloride tablets — sold under the brand names Norpramin, Desipramine HCL, and Desipramine Hydrochloride — are FDA-approved for the treatment of depression in adults. Norpramin tablets and the generic formulations share this same approved indication.

Desipramine tablets are not approved for use in children. Adolescents and elderly patients may be prescribed it in certain circumstances, but at lower doses and under close supervision.
