Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the short version: midazolam (Versed) already works by calming brain activity, which is exactly why it makes you drowsy, relaxed, and forgetful before a procedure. In animal studies, Pinellia ternata seemed to lower activity and lengthen sleep on its own. So putting the two together could, in theory, deepen midazolam's effects, meaning more sedation, longer grogginess, and possibly slower or shallower breathing.

I want to be honest about how solid this is. The evidence here comes from lab and animal work, not human studies, so this is more of a caution than a proven problem. Still, with a sedative like midazolam, it's worth mentioning to your anesthesiologist, doctor, or pharmacist beforehand. Please don't start or stop anything on your own.

Here's the gist with midazolam (Versed) and Pinellia ternata. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that calms brain activity to make you drowsy and relaxed. In animal studies, a Pinellia preparation made animals less active and increased their sleeping time. So the worry is that this herb could add to midazolam's calming effect, meaning more drowsiness, deeper sedation, or slowed breathing than expected.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is only a theoretical concern based on animal research, not solid human studies, so we don't really know how much it matters in people. That said, midazolam is already a strong sedative often used around procedures, so any extra layering deserves caution. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining the two.

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Midazolam

What Is Midazolam Used For?

Brand names: Versed, Seizalam, Nayzilam

Midazolam is used in several different forms depending on the setting. Injectable midazolam (given by IV or IM shot) is used before and during surgery or procedures — such as endoscopy, cardiac catheterization, or bronchoscopy — to cause sedation, reduce anxiety, and prevent memory of the event. It can also be used to start general anesthesia or to keep heavily sedated, ventilated patients comfortable in a critical care unit. Midazolam HCl oral syrup is used specifically in children for sedation and anxiety relief before procedures or anesthesia induction, in a monitored medical setting only.

Nayzilam nasal spray is indicated for a different purpose: the acute treatment of seizure clusters (also called acute repetitive seizures) in people aged 12 and older who have epilepsy. It is used intermittently — not as a daily seizure medicine — when a cluster of seizures breaks through the person's usual pattern.
