Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the simple version: codeine is an opioid, and like other opioids it can slow your brain down, leaving you drowsy, foggy, slow to breathe, or off balance. Pinellia ternata has its own calming, sedative-like effect in the body. Put the two together and those quieting effects could stack on top of each other, so you might feel more sleepy or sluggish than you'd expect from your codeine dose alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This concern comes from animal studies, not solid human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, with something that can affect breathing, I'd play it safe. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor, and watch for extra drowsiness if you do.

Codeine Sulfate tablets are used to manage mild to moderate pain in adults when non-opioid pain treatments have not worked or are not tolerated. It is only appropriate when an opioid is truly needed.

Because of the serious risks of addiction, misuse, overdose, and death, codeine is reserved for patients whose pain cannot be managed adequately with other options. It is not a first-choice pain reliever.
