Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Metharbital is a barbiturate, an older medicine that calms the brain and was mainly used to help control seizures. Like other barbiturates, it can make you drowsy, slow your breathing, and leave you feeling groggy or unsteady. Pinellia ternata appears to have its own sedating, calming effect, so the worry here is that the two together could add up and make you more sleepy than expected.

I want to be honest about how strong this concern is: it comes from animal studies only, where a Pinellia preparation made animals less active and made them sleep longer. We don't have solid human proof. Still, since barbiturates are powerful, it's smart to play it safe. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Here's the gist for metharbital (Gemonil), which is an older barbiturate that calms the nervous system. The concern here is pretty simple: animal studies suggest that Pinellia ternata can add to the drowsy, sedating effects of barbiturates. So if you took the two together, you could in theory feel more sleepy than expected, more groggy, or slower to wake up.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. The evidence is from lab and animal research only, not real people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because layering two things that make you drowsy can stack up, I'd run this past your doctor or pharmacist before combining them. Please don't change your metharbital on your own.
