Here's the gist for metoclopramide (Reglan). On its own, this medication can already make you drowsy, foggy, or tired for some people. Pinellia ternata has been shown in animal studies to calm activity and lengthen sleeping time, so the concern is that stacking the two could add up and leave you more sedated, sluggish, or sleepy than usual.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal work, not human trials, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Metoclopramide isn't a prodrug, so nothing flips here. Still, since Pinellia is potent and best used under expert guidance, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and avoid driving until you know how you feel.

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Metoclopramide

What Is Metoclopramide Used For?

Brand names: Reglan, Metoclopramide Injection, Octamide

Metoclopramide tablets are used in adults for two main conditions. First, they treat symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD — when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus) in people who haven't gotten relief from standard treatments. Second, they ease symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis, a condition where nerve damage from diabetes causes the stomach to empty too slowly.

Treatment is meant to be short-term. For acid reflux, it's used for 4 to 12 weeks. For diabetic gastroparesis, it's generally used for 2 to 8 weeks. It is not recommended for children due to serious safety concerns.
