Pinellia Ternata and Brexanolone

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Brexanolone

Brexanolone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: Brexanolone (Zulresso) is a powerful infusion given in a hospital for postpartum depression, and one of its biggest effects is making you drowsy. In fact, it can sometimes cause sudden, deep sleepiness or even brief loss of consciousness, which is why it's given under close monitoring. Pinellia ternata, in animal studies, seemed to lower activity and increase sleep time. So in theory, pairing it with Brexanolone could add to that sedation and make you more drowsy or hard to wake.

Keep in mind this is based on animal research, not human studies, so the concern is theoretical. Still, since Brexanolone is already so sedating and carefully supervised, don't add Pinellia ternata or any herbal product without first telling your care team.

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas.
