Aripiprazole falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Here's the gist with Abilify (aripiprazole) and Pinellia ternata. This is a calming-type concern, not a metabolism problem. Aripiprazole isn't a prodrug, so we aren't worried about it being switched on or off. Instead, in animal studies a Pinellia preparation lowered activity and made the animals sleep longer, which suggests it could add to the drowsy, sedating side of medicines that work on the brain.

So in theory, pairing it with aripiprazole could leave you feeling extra sleepy, foggy, dizzy, or less steady on your feet. I'll be honest though, this rests on lab and animal data only, so it's a possible, not proven, effect. Since aripiprazole is a long-term mental health medicine, don't change anything on your own. Just run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor first.
