Pinellia Ternata and Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Aripiprazole Lauroxil

Aripiprazole Lauroxil falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with this pairing. Aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada) is a long-acting injection that calms certain brain signals, and it can already cause drowsiness on its own. Pinellia ternata has been shown in animal studies to reduce activity and lengthen sleep, so in theory layering it on top of a sedating medication like this one could add to that sleepy effect. We're talking about possible extra grogginess, dizziness, or feeling slowed down or unsteady.

I want to be honest, though: this concern comes from lab and animal data, not solid human studies, so it's more theoretical than proven. Since your injection works in your body for weeks at a time, it's worth running any Pinellia-containing herbal formula past your pharmacist or doctor before you start it.

  • Throat discomfort

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
