Pinellia Ternata and Diazepam

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Pinellia Ternata interacts with whole categories of medication. Diazepam falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Pinellia Ternata in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Diazepam

Diazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Pinellia Ternata interacts with.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of CNS depressants. Some of these medications include antihistamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, and others.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Here's the gist: diazepam (Valium) already works by quieting down an overactive brain, which is why it can leave you feeling drowsy, relaxed, or a little unsteady. Pinellia ternata, in animal studies, seemed to do something similar by lowering activity and lengthening sleep time. So the worry is that pairing the two could add up, leaving you more sedated than you expect, perhaps with extra sleepiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or poor balance.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is theoretical and comes only from animal research, not human studies, so we can't say how big the effect would be in real life. It's not an alarm bell, just a sensible caution. Before combining them, run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your diazepam dose is high.

BENZODIAZEPINES

2 of 2

Diazepam also falls under BENZODIAZEPINES.

Evidence from animal research shows that a Pinellia ternata preparation decreases activity and increases sleeping time. Theoretically, Pinellia ternata can potentiate the therapeutic effect of benzodiazepines. Some benzodiazepines include lorazepam (Ativan), alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium), midazolam (Versed), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: in animal studies, a processed Pinellia ternata preparation made the animals less active and made them sleep longer. The concern is that it might add to what diazepam (Valium) already does, since Valium itself calms brain activity and causes drowsiness. So taken together, you could theoretically feel more sedated than expected, with extra sleepiness, foggy thinking, slowed reflexes, or unsteadiness.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is based only on animal research, not human studies, so it's more of a 'be aware' than a 'red alert.' Still, both can make you drowsy, so it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and please don't change your Valium on your own.

About Pinellia Ternata

What is Pinellia Ternata?

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Cough with phlegm
  • Morning sickness (traditional use)
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Throat discomfort

Pinellia ternata is a tuber used in traditional Chinese medicine, most often for nausea, vomiting, and phlegmy coughs, and almost always as part of multi-herb formulas. The raw plant is toxic and must be specially processed before use, so it should only be used under qualified guidance. Solid human evidence is limited, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

About Diazepam

What Is Diazepam Used For?

Brand names: Valium, Valium injection, Diastat AcuDial, Valtoco

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
